Andorra. Contrabanded.

Squashed between Catalonia and France, high in the Pyrenees there is land under the French jurisdiction that speaks Catalan. For ages, the main activity of its citizens was smuggling.  For parts of the society, it probably still is.  The country is not part of the European Union, and therefore must be a customs duty heaven.

I passed through Andorra on the way back from Morocco, back in September 1996.  I slept in a tent, close to the border high in the mountains.  It must have been one of the most memorable and travellers-tale night.  The guardian of the campsite invited me and my friends to home-made wine tasting that lasted almost entire night.  All free of charge. He had these great weird shape glasses and was able to pour the wine straight to his mouth from a considerable distance.
