Eritrea. Misrepresented.

The State of Eritrea, which rightfully separated itself from Ethiopia, has since turned into a dictatorship. Sadly. Eritrea has been Italy’s most industralised and developed colony. The capital has the largest collection of colonial architecture anywhere in Africa. It feels like southern Italy in 1920s.

Eritreans are very friendly and honest. The country is mega clean and seems safe. Asmara, so organised, tidy and developed, its pavement cafes, pastry shops and gelaterias does not look African at all.

Massawa, on the coast, at the other hand, has not been rebuilt after the independence war. It is rather sad, but one can easily imagine through the standing examples of exceptional mixes of architectural styles, how grand it once must have been.
